This 1992 Japanese film tells the story of a scientist who sets out to create the new "super Adam and Eve", humans who cannot be controlled by their emotions. Of course, the end result it not exactly what the good doctor expects.

This modern tale of an attempt to build a creature is one of the best "horror" films ever made, even if its not a horror film but something else entirely. Certainly its on my short list of all time great films.
This film was introduced to me by someone who told me "I have this film that probably one of the best films you'll ever see. It will move you and touch you and make you think, but if I told you what it is and told you how its done you will think its the stupidest thing on the face of it and you won't watch it." Intrigued I asked what did he mean, and he said, "Well its a Frankenstein story, with a very goofy sort of edge, but which uses it to its advantage." My ears perked up, and I being a trusting soul took the tape and watched it. I was blown away.
The plot concerns a mad scientist attempting to make a new Adam and Eve in the wake of a suicidal plague that is ravaging the world. Locked up in his lab his experiments go differently then either he or we expect. Some of it is silly (The bolts in the neck, the wrestling moves...), all of it is touching and thought provoking.
I can not recommend this movie enough. If you are willing to take the film on its terms and allow it to tell its story then I urge you to seek this film out and see it. This is an undiscovered gem that will stay with you forever.

Also known as "The Last Frankenstein", this is an extraordinary, impeccably produced horror film. Director Takeshi Kawamura uses Mary Shelley's novel as a mere launching pad for an exploration of subjects as diverse and fascinating as the nature of love, desire, suicide, mass hypnosis, sex, alienation and jealousy.
And though the film is dense with subtext, it is also stunningly photographed and rich in atmosphere and detail. The performances are all amazing and Kawamura's sensitive handling of the strange, delicate relationships between the characters results in an emotionally charged, angst-ridden tragedy.
The scenes of the confused, troubled monster hurtling through a fog-shrouded forest at night are memorable and striking, as is a brilliant home movie-style montage of the film's more curious characters enjoying a precious afternoon at the beach. Kawamura creates resonating visual poetry of horror and sadness barely sighted since Todd Browning's classic "Freaks".
Intelligent, emotional, tragic and real, this is an absolute gem. 9/10
三星半。整体的气质我很喜欢，骗术的徜徉，像散步一样美好。后半段的展开部分还是做得十分老套，虽然角色做了一定的调整，但不是用一个我认为很当下叙事的气质与节奏去进行后半段的诡计部分，它仍然是沿着原作逻辑而来。我个人认为一个比较大的问题在于演员，托妮科莱特演得很好，但被浪费，是我我会冒险的将她和切糕合二为一来进行改编。布莱德利库珀要为本作的缺陷负伤一定的责任，前后半段的冗长完全是由于他的表演造成，他塑造的人物几乎没有变化，而本身这个人物恰恰是历经了翻天覆地的外在+内心的双重的矛盾的变化，时间不仅对他发生了作用，还产生了十分微妙的值得探索的纵深感，至于鲁妮·玛拉我认为她已经流露出来的不是女孩茉莉的气质了，她不是卡罗尔里的那个人间小鹿了，她在勉强塑造，但并不自在。
明明是同一个角度，但从不同的语境捕捉，他说来竟显得如此精彩而令人心怀希望，笑。那就期待虽然一直反复但总会天明吧
我愣住了，为了制造剧情冲突，愣是把真琴搞ooc了，真琴怎么会放着明显不对劲的遥跑回去和弟弟妹妹打游戏，我不理解
拍得那么的平淡苍白，前面马戏团演了那么多，到后面才正式进入正题，像两个不同味道的瓜各切开一半，然后各自安好，毫无交代。凯特布兰切特在该片又充分展现了她做作矫情的30年代百老汇演技风格。小白兔演技依然在线，但这部剧里几乎所有有实力的演员都跟着无聊的剧情黯然失色，打算重温1947版的了
一生都在制造魔法的陀螺，拍了一部关于骗局无限膨胀的电影来揭露魔法的虚假。
陀螺的场景和服化真的是好，沿袭《水形物语》极致的精致。复原一百年前逐渐消逝的马戏和嘉年华时代，陀螺是当仁不让的第一，这一点蒂姆波顿和《马戏之王》都差得远。但他似乎失去了《猩红山峰》时期那种疯狂的想象力，这部最后的高潮戏简直不能再塌了，真的就是走了两步就完了啊。另外本片最大的问题毫无疑问来自库珀，他的身形、言语和表演，都不属于那个时代的灵媒。这应该是个敏感，脆弱的人设，而不是库珀这种带着弱智自信的美国肌肉男。《甘草披萨》里库珀那个角色就特适合他。
这么豪华的豪华卡司，拍出这样的成品……建议直接睡一个小时从大魔王出场开始看，头一个小时太无聊了。期待的魔兔重逢更是世纪大骗案……

这片真没啥可讨论的空间。但真的，你能在陀螺身上，看到这种老导演对每一个场景每一个镜头奉献出精致的工匠精神是多么值得尊敬啊。电影美术部门实在是太强了，看得过程一直在想，这么艺术又那么美的光是什么打的啊？第一部分氛围营造的那么好，是怎么做到的呀！怎么轮廓打的那么妙啊！那外面的雪拍的好实又好轻盈，这又是怎么弄的？
用史诗片的时长去翻新一部黑色电影，无疑是一种暴露短板的做法，陀螺这位导演编剧部分比较弱，但独特的电影审美依旧很在线，服装道具化妆场景仍然是好莱坞电影中的第一梯队。只可惜在这个画质越来越高清的时代，翻新一部黑色电影大概率只会落得既不卖座，又没口碑的下场。但我仍然会为陀螺这次勇敢的尝试，表示肯定。
看完当夜做了噩梦，想着影片结尾睡不着。五光十色的大都市和有钱人的世界没混成，被欲望反噬，逃回最初的马戏团也只能当底层geek（被圈禁被利用），人类社会恐怖片。
影片表现的是贪婪自负虚荣所带来的恶果，男主角最后的结局，他所得到的报应完全是他自找的，他被蛇蝎美人算计了也是题中之意，整部电影就像是一部警世小说。
观看的每一分钟都在好奇原版是怎么拍的，一个充满戏剧张力和悬疑色彩的故事，因为陀螺选择了观众全知的视角而被拍得非常无聊。我看他采访说他在这一部里想重点做好人物，可人物塑造的关键，不必要展现连篇累牍的成长史，而是在重要行为动机上埋好伏笔，导演的叙事效率太低。Cooper明明机关算尽却不聪明，凯特和玛拉都缺乏与他的化学反应，一个困在房间里做有限的戏剧表演，另一个看似拥有完整弧光但反叛完全没有力度。陀螺美学在这部里面最集中体现在嘉年华的布景上，其他特征只靠阴森打光和下雨下雪来烘托可实在算不上高级。
影片本身气氛虽然够，但是故事讲得不够好，很多人物根本立不住，完全工具人和浮于表面…
【YVR-5th】太长太拖沓，尤其是马戏团部分，而且影像风格前后不统一，看得昏昏欲睡，可惜一众好卡司了。
前半部份太长，但后半部两位老演员的演技简直就是互飙，导致鲁尼玛拉没有发挥的地方，老版应该更好看，结局封神
就很傻 很漫长 laughable 看起来辗转反侧这个那个的 然鹅我只是觉得突兀又做作 看得好尴尬，然后payback看起来是好像挺厉害让人深思的，然而我的耐心已经被折腾完了，一落幕就迫不及待的离场了，坚持到了最后结束只是替自己不值得，一秒也不想多浪费了，还没有crimson peak好笑
【玉面情魔@伪君子】库珀比起泰隆·宝华多了几分乡下人的憨厚，狡黠的笑容让人有些不寒而栗。很可惜，这不是一部女版的《恶魔》，凯特·布兰切特和鲁妮·玛拉最后没有走到一起，三个出色的女性表演成了一盘散沙。
没看过老版本的（没有中文字幕），这部陀螺翻拍电影观看后总体感觉良好，是一次愉快的观影体验。强烈推荐观赏。
