The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 3.5/5 密闭空间话剧电影，叙事和多重反转完全依靠台词，有点太话剧而削弱了悬疑的紧张感。如果剧本能再打磨，精简一下台词的话会更符合电影的节奏。MR的演技撑起了整部片。
剧情其实有刻意设计的地方，但结局还是不错的。
看完才发现，居然是《模仿游戏》的同款导演。「我觉得我穿上西装革履，是想说说服自己是个文明人。我太想当个好人了。」我觉得电影别名不仅可以叫《誓不低头》，也可以叫《裁缝店的那一夜》、或者叫《芝加哥黑帮二三事》。仅仅只是一夜的故事，地点就在1956年某个雪夜的芝加哥街边裁缝店里，因为有限的时间和空间叙事风格，很多人都觉得像是话剧。惊悚悬疑的剧情外核下，丰富地包裹着黑帮内斗、杀人藏尸、帮派火拼联邦窃听、扮猪吃老虎、抓内鬼、终极Boss大反击，裁缝店的这一夜可真是忙碌啊～ 故事的谜面由一位老裁缝开始、最后 故事的谜底又回到了这个来历不明的英国老裁缝身上，最懦弱的人往往最狠毒。可以在仅有的空间里把故事变得这么丰满，确实很考验功力。各个演技在线，故事层层反转也有了，但不知道为什么 看到最后终归少了点酣畅感。
非常细腻有趣的人物关系和情感，对舞台演出的执念和渴望逗笑观众的真诚，足以打动我。非常喜欢最后的一个长镜头。年长后的主角回到了过去，那些可爱的人，回忆里的人，渗透了真诚的想念
还行，明明是部美国片，但是英伦味还挺正的。导演是《模仿游戏》拿奥斯卡的编剧小哥，整个片子也能感觉到，非常强调编剧的存在。这种也属于是国内观众会喜欢的“强反转”的那一类片子，尽管我认为这个剧作还是有些过于依赖巧合的推动了，但娱乐性和流畅感还是不错的，对于首执导筒的长片来说，完成度已经很高了。同时，借用剪裁师的身份，形成一种人性表里的对比，以“文明”来掩盖“野蛮”，意象到位。服装美术非常精美，马克·里朗斯的表演也很强，三星半。

小场景佳作。嗯，离间、策反、李代桃僵、瓮中捉鳖、借刀杀人层出不穷，反转反转再反转，基本没冷场。老头的选角么，那份木讷，虽不敢说完美，但算贴切。

剧本非常小巧精致，在单一场景下靠一个核心道具磁带把故事出场人物串联完全，依靠大量对白把故事推进的引人入胜，叙事节奏掌握的非常好，内奸和作局者情节的反转也非常让人意外，但前面铺垫过程已经在不断暗示，足见编剧考虑的周到，男主演技更是加分，这个角色在面临生命危险下的沉着，镇定，睿智是电影里的点睛之笔。（8/10）
单一空间悬疑片，结构非常工整，商业类型片的标本。改编舞台剧和翻拍都是很好的选题。
